Whitening toothpaste ~ Oral-B Pro-Expert

What I’m about to tell you is something I learnt whilst living with three dentists last year. This toothpaste is the best. It’s the only toothpaste that actually whitens and strengthens your teeth at the same time. And trust me, it whitens. Oral-B basically have a patent on a type of fluoride which is the only one of its kind to have enamel building properties. Most people think that Colgate is the best but don’t be fooled, they just have the best marketing campaign. Remember: Oral-B Pro Expert Whitening. Sold.

Autumn nail rescue

As the sun makes an appearance more reluctantly for each day my summer glow begins to shed and skin, hair, and nails become duller and paler. My nails in particular can become quite weak and often flake at the tips so I have to pay more attention to these little babies. I have found two rescue items which are super cheap and should be a staple in anyone's manicure collection. First, its the 4 in 1 nail file found in Boots. Cuboid in shape, this nail file has one side for filing, one for ridge-removal, one for smoothing, and one for shining. Its called the '4 way buffer block' and costs £2. So handy. The second is this Superdrug own brand 2 in 1 hand and nail cream I happened to come across. It's got keratin and and pro-vitamin B5 and really helps to strengthen nails. Costs £1.05 for a small tube to pop in your handbag. Bargain!

Haircut!

Got my hair cut yesterday and thought I should put up a pic. I am slightly obsessed at the moment with the idea of growing long healthy hair. I think that having good hair makes the difference between averagely pretty and gorgeous (think Kate Middleton... Controversial?). The dream is to upstage Kim Sears at the next Wimbledon final with my own luscious mane. Probably a little ambitious considering she has about the same amount of hair in the wispy front bits as I have on my whole head. Regardless, I have stopped highlighting (for the moment anyway, just to get the natural shine back), getting it regularly cut, and treating it well. Beautiful people look healthy so eating food to nourish your hair is important too (more on beauty foods later!). I am also a huge advocator of enhancing your natural appearance rather than changing it. This goes for make up too as I will also expand more on later!

Hope you like it.

The 5/2 diet

After watching the BBC Horizon documentary on fasting and the media attention that followed, I decided to try out the 5/2 diet. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is basically when you choose 2 days in each week where you eat 500 calories (if you're a woman, 600 if you're a man) and for the other 5 days you eat normally. Not only are you supposed to lose weight, but fasting is supposedly very beneficial to your long term health and reduces the risk of a catalogue of age-related diseases.

The science behind it goes: when you eat normally, you give your cells fuel so that they have energy to fill out normal processes and replication driven by a chemical known as 'Insulin Growth Factor 1' or IGF-1. The more your cells replicate, the more chance of mutations occurring, a probability which increases as we age due to harmful molecules known as free radicals. This is basically what aging is and happens to us all. Mutations during replication are also the cause behind many common diseases which normally appear in later life, including cancer (excessive and uncontrollable replication) and Alzheimers (over-replication of harmful proteins which form plaques in the brain). Recent evidence, however, has shown that we can reduce our levels of IGF-1 simply by eating significantly less for 2 days. This in turn deprives cells of fuel so that they stop replicating as well as switching on genes which allow them to repair DNA damage caused by, for example, free radicals.

My dad started this diet after Christmas and has lost over ten pounds since then. I have been doing it for a couple of weeks and have had slightly less drastic results. Although I never really started the diet as a weight loss regime I though I would have lost more than I have (about 3 pounds I think). Having been on this diet now for a few weeks there are a few things I thought I would share.

First of all, in many newspapers and magazines it says you can eat 'whatever you want' on the 5 days when you're not fasting and still lose weight. Definitely not true, you still have to eat well on the in-between days (3 meals a day, avoid snacking, portion control and healthy options are my 4 simple rules which I stick to most of the time) if you want to lose weight. Otherwise you will just put on what you lost on your fast days.

Secondly, I would recommend fasting on days when you are busy but don't really have to concentrate, or at least not in the afternoons. I don't find the hunger such an issue, it's more a weird feeling of being slightly bored of not eating. It's hard to explain, if you try it out you will see what I mean. That's why it's good to keep yourself distracted. I have never experienced any dizziness and you shouldn't since it's only one day of fasting at a time (and you keep yourself hydrated) although I do feel a sort of mild discomfort in my head. I have also had some days when I have found it hard to sleep.

So what does 500 calories look like?
Here is a photo of everything I ate in my last fast day:
Apple + Coffee with soy milk = ~100 cals
Pea & Ham soup = ~200 cals
Half slice of rye bread with slice of ham and tomatoes = ~100 cals
Yogurt = 100 cals

0 calorie foods include herbal teas, black coffee, diet drinks, and water.

I am going to try to keep doing it purely for the long term health benefits, Mondays and Thursdays being my fast days. Hope you have found this interesting, I would love to hear if anyone else has tried this and what their thoughts were.

Autumn nail polish

Since a friend introduced me to light brown, I have grown to love autumnal shades of nail varnish. I'm currently wearing Maybelline Forever Strong Pro in a shade which I can only describe as the underside of a mushroom. It's actually called 'Taupe couture' or numbered 786. Another slightly lighter shade I like is Golden Brown 19. Bought last week from SuperDrug for £4.09 and worn for the first time this weekend.

Stay away from sulfates!!!

Hey as promised I am writing a post on sulfates in beauty products and I thought now would be a good time (for reason that will become clear later..).

Recently there's been a big hoo-ha about beauty products that contain sulfates. Sulfates are basically what makes products foamy in water, therefore found in the majority of shampoos and many face washes. You want to look out for 'sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate' in the ingredients list- and stay away! Sulfates are a detergent derived from sulphuric acid and basically strip your hair and skin of natural moisture. These are especially bad if you wash your hair every day. Have you ever noticed that the more you was your hair the quicker it gets greasy? Sulfates are the culprit. The more you strip your scalp of natural oils the quicker it will produce more.

Thankfully, plenty of sulfate free products exist. Gel washes for the face, mentioned in my everyday skin care routin post, are usually sulfate free. L'oreal have launched a range of sulfate free shampoos which are currently on offer at Superdrug and Sainsburys - hurrah! It's called the 'EverPure' range (pictured below) and are going for about a fiver with lots of different ones for different hair types. Not much more expensive and it makes such a difference to your hair. I promise.

The shampoo and conditioner range in the Bodyshop is also sulfate-free and they have lots of exciting flavours like strawberry and coconut.

Most normal conditioners do not contain sulfates (conditioners do not really lather in your hair) but check the ingredients list anyway. That way you can spend a bit more on your shampoo and save on the conditioner. Brill.

Hope this was helpful, any questions just message/comment! Ully x

Day and night moisturisers

Even though I probably shouldn't, I change the moisturisers I use quite often depending on the state of my skin. These are the two moisturisers I'm using at the moment, and so far so good!

The Simple Oil Balancing Moisturiser is slightly thicker than the Clean&Clear one so this is what I use after I've washed my face before I go to bed. Like I said, it's slightly thicker but not greasy so it works for oilier skin types too. My sister has combination skin and often complains of greasy skin in the morning but she says this one has been working for her.

I swear by this Johnson's Clean&Clear moisturiser. I have been using it for over a year now and think that everyone should have it in their bathroom cabinet. It's oil free so can be used whenever your skin feels a bit thirsty and can be applied both under and over makeup. It's the moisturiser I use first thing in the morning as well. Not only is it oil free, but it also contains something called salicylic acid (sounds scary) which is really good for your skin and prevents spots from appearing in the first place.

It's also cheap as chips so go get some! Ully x

White eyeliner

Here's a quick make up tip that I think makes all the difference. White eyeliner on the waterline of your eye makes your eyes look bigger and brighter and takes about two seconds to apply! For even more added brightness, use a super pale shimmery eye shadow and dab a bit into the inner corner. Easy!

My everyday skin care routine

Now I know that every person has different types of skin and that skin-care routines will vary to what suits you as an individual. Even so, 'if you are kind to your skin, your skin will be kind to you' is a mantra that fits with all skin types and so I thought I'd tell you a little of what I know about how to treat your skin kindly.

These three staples will pretty much suit all skin types.

1. Facial wash:
Cleansing gel washes are fresh but don't strip your skin of natural oils. Just as long as your cleanser is sulfate free (non-foaming) your skin will be happy. This goes for shampoos as well, but more on sulfates in a separate post...

2. Eye make up remover:
I avoid using wipes as I think they pull on your eyelashes and are often rough in texture, instead taking the creamier option; removing the make up with specific moisturising remover on cotton wool after dissolving the make up with water first. The skin in this area is delicate and is one of the first places you'll start to wrinkle so it's definitely worth being gentle here, even if it is slightly less convenient (you can forgive yourself for grabbing the wipes after a late night out)

3. Moisturiser:
Very important. Something thicker for the night and something lighter in the day.

I happen to be using the Simple range for all of these (moisturiser not in photo!) although there are lots of different brands which all depend on personal preference. I also use Evian to rinse. I promise I'm not a water snob living in a palace of cheese, I just can't use London hard water on my face!

And that's pretty much it!

Coconut oil for tanning

I thought I'd make the most of these last summer days and spent the day tanning in the garden with my friend (life is hard..). We used coconut oil instead of tanning oil, an absolute must have for those of you naughty like me who still can't resist a natural tan!

Coconut oil is super multi-purpose, some of its many uses including cooking, eating, moisturising, stretch marks.. A pretty big jar like this from Holland & Barretts lasts forever and is often on offer. It also smells yummy!

Love this stuff.

Anti-hard water apple cider vinegar hair rinse

Hey guys so I though I'd start off with something simple and write about this super easy hair treatment.

Hard water is basically water with a higher mineral content and alkaline (hair and skin is naturally slightly acidic). This home-made apple cider vinegar rinse works a treat if you live in an area like me where this is a problem. Do this after you've shampooed and conditioned your hair as normal.

Take 100ml apple cider vinegar + 100ml distilled water
Mix in a bowl or glass (wide rimmed)

I found the trickiest part was actually getting it onto my hair without pouring it all over myself and into my eyes! After a few cider vinegar tears I found that if you stand in the shower and lean over, you can place all your hair into the glass whilst pushing the glass against your head. Stand upright and slowly release the mixture little by little, spreading it out over your whole head. Rinse out with distilled water and voila.

Having recently moved back home to London, I immediately notice my hair gets very dry and brittle due to the water, no matter how much I condition. This rinse neutralises the hard minerals, making it super soft and shiny. Once a week is often enough, too much acid isn't good for your hair either!

Much love

My first post!

Hello and welcome to my blog, all about bringing out and enhancing your own natural beauty with make-up, natural products, and healthy living.

I was inspired to start this having spent a month in Malawi, south-east Africa, without wearing a scrap of makeup and minimal products - an impressive feat if I do say so myself! I feel like I have come back a clean slate, ready to try lots of weird and wonderful beauty tips out there and report back to you readers. I will be writing about things like makeup, beauty products, healthy eating, etc. so will try to include something for everyone. I would love comments and requests, so don't be shy when giving feedback!

Hopefully you'll find this blog useful but more importantly, hopefully you'll find it enjoyable!
